Error on LA file

The early 5.3.8 packages contained a wrong file for Los Angeles. I have just updated the zip content on every site I manage (our owns, PalmSphere, Handango, PalmGear & PocketGear).

Sorry for the possible inconvenience and thanks to R. Garvey for spotting and reporting the bug.

i-MetrO

I found a bug on i-MetrO that made the detailed information on places of interest unavailable for most cities.

MetrO 5.3.8

Our first release for 2006 is out, with a lot of changes in many cities and a few improvements on our programs.

Download the new version and see the details on the MetrO homepage.

PalmOS: DIA & VGZ...

The PalmOS addicts will have recognized what I am about to discuss here: the DIA (for "Dynamic Input Area", although I think Palm has renamed that recently) and the VGZ (for "Virtual Graffiti Zone") are Palm & Sony versions of the same feature, which allows to use the large screens on recent PalmOS handhelds while keeping a grafitti area that used to be silkscreened on earlier or cheaper devices.

For those who have no clue, let's just say this has been a developer nightmare since its first inception, at least from my standpoint. Well, Palm has had the brilliant idea to add yet another twist on the concept with the Tungsten T|X. That simply means that there are now 5 different (and largely incompatible) versions of the same feature in the wild:
  • The "original" Sony version, added in PalmOS 4;
  • Another Sony version, for their devices based upon PalmOS 5;
  • The trial version from palmOne, which made it on the Tungsten T|3 (the one that required compatibility libraries that so many people install by mistake on other devices);
  • The version that was implemented on the Tungsten T|5 and LifeDrive;
  • And now, this new one that appeared on the Tunsgten T|X, which looks remotely similar to what should have been the standard in "Cobalt".
And as far as I can tell, each one of these libraries has its own bugs! And don't tell me it's because I don't know how to program: when you close the DIA on a T|5 the screen first extends to about 452 pixels before settling at 448 pixels, I just can't see what's the feature there...

Which brings me to what took me all this day time: Métro still had some bugs (on the T|5 & LD) which I have (apparently) fixed, but the debug versions of the simulator still crashes (for no reason, in my opinion). There are still major problems with the T|X and unless I can find a solution, I would recommend not to play with the DIA on any form other than the main screen.

The good news (at last!) is that the next version of Métro will fully support landscape mode (if I am satisfied with my testing)!

Copenhagen on i-MetrO

As a trial, C. Hindsgaul sent geographic coordinates for a few stops (subway stations and the largest railway stations) in the Copenhagen (Denmark) system and I installed the resulting file on i-MetrO.

Unfortunately, Google offers only satellite images for this city and no map.

Kusttram

K. de Bondt suggested the creation of a new database for the Kusttram, which is the longest tram line in the world, running for 68 km along the belgian coast between the French and Dutch borders.

This line was already present in the Dunkerque (France) database, which I updated as well incidentally, but it would not be obvious for users to look for it in this file...

Paris (works)

One station re-opened this morning and two others are due to re-open tomorrow in the Paris (France) subway. Download the updated "temporary" files:

Next update planned on February 4th.

Following on his previous contribution, D. Garbrecht sent an additional (boat) line for the Bangkok (Thailand) database. We're also discussing the opportunity to add the express services on the same line...

Happy New Year!

The old year is now finished and it's time to wish you all a Happy New Year for 2006!

For the year to come we hope we will have time for some improvements to our software, including:
  • An easy to use database editor that may reduce the work needed to add new city or update the existing ones,
  • Various enhancements in the program itself, that we have been thinking of for quite some time,
  • Maybe an automatic installer that will solve the many questions we get from first-time users,
  • ...
And we hope you will all keep on helping us making the program better!
